Singapore gets ready for Crazy Horse Paris Asian premiere Mon Dec 5, 3:12 PM ET
SINGAPORE (AFP) - The Crazy Horse Paris topless cabaret makes its Asian debut in Singapore, with local authorities hoping the iconic French dance troupe will help shake off the nation's staid image and energize tourism.
The cabaret's scantily-clad female dancers take to the stage at a former two-storey warehouse that has been specially renovated to incorporate a 450-seat theatre, bar and bistro.
The venue is located in the heart of the Clarke Quay tourist area and was refurbished at a cost of seven million Singapore dollars (four million US).
Tourism authorities are betting that the female troupe will work their Parisian magic to draw more visitors to the city-state.
"We are glad that Singapore is Asia's first city to host the world-renowned Crazy Horse Paris... the show will add much colour to Singapore's entertainment and nightlife scene," Lim Neo Chian, the chief executive of Singapore Tourism Board, said last month.
Singapore, a tiny island nation with no natural wonders to boast of, is making big efforts to boost its tourism appeal by building man-made attractions to augment its reputation for efficiency, cleanliness and safety.
In a landmark decision in April, the government lifted a ban on casinos and gave the go-ahead for two Las Vegas-style gaming resorts to be built by 2009 in an attempt to remove its staid image and boost its share of Asia's growing travel industry.
Tourism earnings totalled 9.6 billion dollars in 2004 from 8.3 million visitors and the city-state is hoping to raise arrivals to 17 million and receipts of 30 billion dollars annually within a decade.
