It has only become difficult because arseholes like Keating, Hawke and Howard have allowed concentration of media ownership to flourish in this country. They have done so for their own political gain.
Our democracy is dead. The lack of scrutiny of our government has end it. Where we the media when Alvarez Solon was thrown out of this country? Where were they when the AWB were funding Saddam's insurgency? They were enthusiastically supporting Howard's illegal invasion. Why? The people didn't want it... any simple investigation showed that Saddam did NOT have WMD but the press went quiet....
Now Howard is handing them NEW media rules... because of their support of his illegal invasion.
Yep. Democracy is dead. Howard, Hawke and Keating end it.
I'm sure it is... introduced under the cover of some sporting contest or other... bread and circuses abound!
We deserve the government we've got.
They are perfectly free to report all the good things the Howard government bring the people.
There is no democracy without a media that is independent of government. There is no democracy without a media willing to investigate government... instead of accepting their press releases as gospel.
Trouble is that Australians don't even understand what democracy means... they take no responsibility for the loss of our democracy. In fact, they are still under the delusion that democracy still exists in this country.
