To share with you, Claire, religion need not be banned.
political or non-political parties claim to do the work of a religion. These agencies must have done those right or wrong things in the name of that religion.
Such agencies can very well be banned for specific issues. It can be done in any religious or a secular country.
In India, some hindu agencies were banned for two year after the demolition of Babri ruins. Also, some islamic organizations have been banned in the past on the charges of spreading terrorism, I guess.
During the ban, no activity can be conducted in the name of banned agencies, and all the bank accounts of banned agencies remain frozen. Thus, with the money in-flow cut, all activities come to a standstill.
Finally, it remains on the rulers how effectively and how widely they impose a ban.
The OP's talk about "banning muslims from the free society" is probably just for contemplating. He does not want to ban all muslims, I guess. He has just seen the link of some activities with muslims. I would suggest him to analyze it further and pinpoint some agencies which are doing those wrong things using muslims, and then get those agencies banned.
It will work.
