Australia has a reasonably strong military capability with modern hi-tech buttets and are trained and equipped for a conventional military engagement with, for good measure, a few counter-terrorism units that could deal with a stationary and contained threat.
That said, here are numerous alternate scenarios to conventional warfare that could be considered, but let me, for arguments sake, pose just one. I won't use a dirty plant or WMD because that would be too simple.
Imagine in the future, three commercial containers ships or stripped-out tankers berthing simultaneously in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Each ship houses 1000 well armed fanatics who don't wear a uniform, hold no respect whatsoever for the rules of engagement, or for civilians. On berthing they disperse their contents into 5 - 10 man combat units, each unit commandeers a vehicle and they quickly spread throughout the three main cities. Using K-Mart quality GPS receivers, they head for pre-determined targets, like Lucas Heights, the CBD, Kirrabilly, Mascot Bridge and road tunnels, central railway station, TV and radio stations, hospitals, Dams, refineries police posts and armouries and our very small lightly-manned administrative military posts. They strike at targets of opportunity along the way causing mbutt liquidate and mayhem as they go. Streets and arterial roads are blocked.
A number of container trucks loaded with arms and explosives are unloaded and make their way to certain suburbs where they expect to find easy recruits to their cause. Suburbs where religious fanatics preach and where those who gathered the intel and the GPS co-ordinates, reside.
The police, some private security guards and a few Sporting shooters offer some resistance here and there, but are quickly overwhelmed by superior firepower. The airforce, army and navy react. It will take days to get arI disagreeets like tanks etc. relocated from the North, artillery can't be used, the airforce can't carry out strikes because the enemy is well dispersed and hiding amongst millions of hostages. Helicopters are shot from the skys with sophisticated shoulder held rocket launchers. The navy sinks the already berthed and empty container ships. One for us.
Within 24 hours for all intents and purposes, the cities are under enemy control, communications knocked out and the population is in a frenzy. Canberra is attacked by civilian aircraft high-jacked from Mascot and Tullermarine and used as plants. No-body dares to come to our aid as they have been warned of the civilian casualties their actions might trigger. The UN is speechless - but what's new - to look good they issue 45 new resolutions and then claim they are too busy and will have to hold another meeting.
As military buttets begin to focus on the three main cities and move into position on their perimeters to contain the enemy, more enemy ships leave a nearby archipelago and travel the short distances to Broome, Darwin, Cairns and the other now undefended northern cities. The are quickly overwhelmed and our armed forces are in a state of confusion.
Chaos is now the order of the day for most Australians and everyone has in one way or another, becomes a hostage.
John Howard prays for an armed population to intevene, but he quickly realises he has disarmed us so he issues a decree from his bunker that broom-sticks are to be made available to all able bodied persons and we should fight to the last man to save his sorry a*se.
Just a simple scenario, a bit of tongue-in-cheek for comment. But before you do comment, ask yourself if you think it impossible to consider - remember on 8 September, the events of 911 would have sounded as equally ridiculous.
The world can and does change in a day.
