Can you see that they have independent legislatures, judiciary, police.. that they are NOT homogenious, buttimilated.. THE SAME!
In short they are DISTINCT ENbreastIES within the federation!

YOu can go and play with yourself about more distinct, less distinct, about as distinct as any other time you wish..
But they were distinct enbreasties.. BEFORE ferderation and they remain distinct enbreasties after federation.

This is ANALAGOUS to citizens with DISTINCT cultures, ruling over the realms of personal freedom (thought speech, religious belief, choice of loveual partner.. etc) WITHIN a multicultural society, to which they cede a common power, to regulate them all by LAW, created by those they freely choose (eg, no liquidate, rape or hate speech inciting violent affray)
IF the States had not agreed to some common LAW, both establishing the Commonwealth and defining it's powers there would be no federation, their would be SEPERATISM in DISUNITY.. this would be like people living in tribes, each under their own laws, rather than in multicultural harmony.
Unity in Diversity is by far the most favourable outcome.

The laws of our land are binding on all of us.
Respect for the symbols of our land is a personal choice, you are not compelled to bow! Mine is to disdain both ignorant disrespect, and bellicose jingoism. In this I stand with a long line of Aussies whose love of country is deep, rather than loud.
And as i want that freedom to CHOOSE how I relate to the OPTIONAL elements of culture, so i extend that freedom to my fellow Australians, and do not seek to COMPEL them to share my views, merely to CONVINCE them to do so.
