There is a weight of circumstantial evidence, such as the fact that Burrell was in desperate need of money at the time and having been an employee of Whelan he was in a position to have known the Whelan's had insurance cover of at least $1mill against kidnapping; that a public phone box near his property had been used to phone through the kidnapper's demands, and it had also on that same day at a later time been known to have been used by Burrell.

But all that aside, most damning is that Burrell has been unable to offer any explanation concerning the discovery at his home of a couple of rough drafts of the kidnapper's ransom note. (Presumably they are in his handwriting, or his lawyer would have made something of it.)

It seems that Kerry Whelan was party to some plan of deception, too, because she had told her husband that she was going to a morning appointment at her hairdresser's, but although she drove to the shopping centre, it turns out that she did not have a hairdresser's appointment for that morning of the day she disappeared.

Any corpse disposed of in the region where Burrell lived may never be found; it is said that the rural properties in that area are honeycombed by old abandoned-collapsed-flooded underground mine shafts too dangerous to search. -- John Savage (my news address is not valid for email)
