Aielyn Yes you are childish, ignoring the glaring holes in your idiotic logic because it undermines everything you say. Funny, a lot of "arbitrary" criteria in there, shared with the usage of "ethnicity...

Aielyn That is the dictionary he berated you for not using, when you had already cited it! B...

*Sigh* This is really childish.

You didn't bother to look further into the post before replying, did you? I covered the oxford definition of "race" in the very next part of the post. You are an idiot.

Already covered later in the post, all definitions given by OED (online).

How is religious characteristic vague? You are either a christian, or you are not. Same with every other religion. How is linguistic characteristic vague? You either speak Japanese, or you don't, and you either have a scottish accent, or you don't. How is cultural characteristics vague? You either eat fish because of culture (like the japanese), or you don't. How is national origin-ancestry vague? Either you are born in Japan, or you are not, and either you are of Japanese ancestry, or you are not.

None of them are vague.

See above. (And I note the "broken record" syndrome - you sound like Rod Speed).

You really are dim - that is what I said (unless you mean YOUR definition, in which case you are wrong - will be covered later in the reply)

All four types of ethnicity are descriptors - they describe specific properties of a person. As such, they do not require a scientific definition.

Yes, it is. "Race", as racists use it, means "One of the great divisions of mankind, having certain physical peculiarities in common".

Aielyn No it doesn't: racist adj 1: based on racial intolerance; "racist remarks" 2: discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion syn: antiblack, anti-Semitic, anti-Semite(a...

So what consbreastutes a physical "peculiarity"? THAT is where it is vague - defining what makes something peculiar, in context. To clbuttify someone as having dark hair is descriptive - and usually contextual (in a room of blondes, a light brown haired person has dark hair). So what does it mean for someone to be "caucasian" (race-wise)? Would an albino "black" person be considered "caucasian"? Would an asian? Would Michael Jackson? What does it describe, race-wise?

No, because ethnicity is quite specifically defined - to be ethnically Lebanese is descriptive - it means you are either born in Lebanon, or are the child of an ethnically Lebanese person. Now - explain for me what it means to be racially "caucasian".

I note that you cut out all of the definitions of race, and their analysis. You wanted to hide that I had already covered the definition of "Race", did you? Just demonstrates to me that you are devious (and not in a good way).

English, please. "ingored"? "often use usages"?

It is true that there is some overlap between what racists clbuttify as "race" and what everyone clbuttifies as "ethnicity" - the difference is, race is not descriptive - you cannot tell me in words what it means to be (racially) "asian", or "african-black", or "caucasian". I can tell you, in words, what it means to be (ethnically) "Lebanese", or "Christian", or "Scottish", on the other hand, so ethnicity is descriptive.

Sorry - I have covered this more than sufficiently. Ethnicity is descriptive, while Race is vague and non-descriptive (cannot be put into words).

"Aboriginal" is an ethnicity - nation of origin. "African American" is an ethnicity - nation of ancestry combined with nation of origin.

And get the names right - if you want to use "aborigine" (generic word for people of the land - note small "a"), at least spell it correctly, otherwise use "Aboriginal" (specific word for Australian aborigine - note capital "A").

I have no problem discussing it, and either does fasgnadh. I don't know who "FagBags" is (although I know who you are talking about).

Aielyn You seem distressed by typos. Except, you dope, he hasn't called just bigots "racists", he's called people "racist" merely for identifying someone as belonging to a racial group...

Sorry, but you are wrong. Ethnicity is descriptive, while race is not. THAT is the key difference - ethnicity can be determined from description, but race is arbitrary and non-descriptive. See above, where I ask you to explain what it means to be "caucasian".

As I said above, "african-american" is an ethnicity, often incorrectly termed a "race" - what of the many dark-skinned people still living in Africa? They share the same "physical peculiarities", but they are not "african-american". "African-American" specifically refers to those born in America but of African ancestry.

No, you cannot. Ethnicity does not involve "physical peculiarities", and Race (in the sense that racists use) does not involve religion, culture, language, or nation of origin-ancestry.

Note: When I use the word "nation", it does not necessarily mean nation in the political sense (as in the sense that Greece is a nation) - for instance, "New York" is a valid "nation" in this sense, as is "Africa". nation (noun) 1. a. A large aggregate of communities and individuals united by factors such as common descent, language, culture, history, or occupation of the same territory, so as to form a distinct people. Now also: such a people forming a political state; a political state.
