The media sees it as their role to get (and package!) an interesting story. I don't think that they are fundamentally the problem here, though on many stories they have a lot to answer for.

It could be, as I said in another posting, but it is often that those who oppose him are reaching for the nearest and biggest gun. With the Racial Villification laws, they have one. It's smoking.
Free speech is a right that needs to be defended all the way. When a society loses that, it loses something absolutely basic. I have always been concerned about the way the Racial Villification laws might be used to silence genuine criticism. But those who support them have to realise that these same laws may be used against them as well.
