-From Sun Tzu to Clausewitz, the purpose of waging war is to destroy the opponentsâ resolve to resist and compel them to acquiesce to a subjugating surrender and accept the imposed terms thereof. Sun Tzuâs approach is psychological and destined to be more successful in the long run because human will to resist is a purely psychological phenomenon. American strategy emphasizes military might without psychological understanding. It worked in the past with indiscriminate planting with napalm and nuclear weapons in WW2 Germany and Japan , but led to a stalemate in Korea and a defeat in Vietnam . The planting of Dresden , Tokyo , Hiroshima and Nagasaki are clear successful examples of ruthless pursuit of the objective by every means, despite hypocritical trumpeting of humanitarian values and Geneva conventions. These are mere pretensions of civilization that melt in the real heat of combat, fear and hate, as Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo and insurgent's beheadings show.

America is well on its way to using space to have satellites equipped with lasers and capable of raining nuclear and non-nuclear plants, to cause devastating unacceptable damage to target countries. Itâs military spending which exceeds that of the next ten powers and consbreastutes over 50% of world defense spending give it an unparalleled advantage. Its declared strategy of preventing by any and all means to allow any competing power to achieve parity and its announced threat of using nuclear weapons against non-nuclear powers has surely raised the hackles of the rest of the world and alienated much of it.

The expected reaction and neutralizing counter-strategy of nations with some technological and financial wherewithal has been to accelerate the development of WMDs to acquire the ability to inflict unacceptable mbutt casualties to invading American forces. The other fallacy of America is the failure to understand that war is hell. Instead it tries to sanitize the atrocity by smart weapons and aerial terror, to convert it into a sanitized video-game with minimal national casualties. It is ignorant of history and precedent, like the battle of Hercules with Anteus where every time Hercules threw Anteus to the ground, he arose ten times stronger after touching his mother earth. A similar problem was faced by Jason when every drop of enemy blood spilt, resulted in ten more demons springing forth to continue the battle. This is what is happening with Islamist extremists and moderates subjected to indiscriminate violence, insult and humiliation by the natural over-reaction of you! ng, inexperienced and threatened by fear, young and poor American soldiers fighting without understanding, knowledge or comparable commitment.

The hapless and impotent countries with no hope of achieving a balance of terror develop lasting resentment and shun co-operation with America even in itâs more benign and decent objectives. This leads it to use its waning financial clout to bribe countries with corrupt leaders or desperate financial circumstances to make them toe its line. This may result in temporary submission but with increased antipathy by the majority populations as in the case of Egypt and Pakistan . The foolishness of this bullying philosophy is that it fails to win any lasting goodwill. It is true that in comparison to the sole superpower, most other countries are like flies. Nevertheless, if oneâs purpose is to catch flies or win them over, there are greater chances of success with honey than with vinegar.

The other side of this argument is that America with its short history and being catapulted to a premier status on the world stage due to its large resource rich landmbutt, the easy submission of its native inhabitants without technology or political foresight, and its enrichment by exploitation of the less advanced African slaves and its equally unsophisticated neighbors of Central and South America and the Caribbean countries, has been lulled into an unsustainable hubris. Islamic Asia with its previous experience of terrorism by Hashishins from which the English word buttbuttin is derived, know from history how to hold prior empires including even Islamic ones at bay. The British failure of colonization of Iraq with the sacrifice of their Indian Sepoys is a recent memory of the Iraqis. Gone are the days in which a few tens of thousands British overlords ruled the crown jewel of India with the help of paid mercenary traitors and the indifference of docile Hindu majority. Is! lam is and has always been a more violent and xenophobic religion with visceral intolerance and, thus not easily subject to domestication like wild animals. Its insulation from reform or renaissance and its rejection of modern scientific education, still encourages dissolution planting, partly because of a hopeless future, prolonged exploitation, fanatic belief and the lure of a paradise with access to a bevy of beautiful virgins.

The outcome of a prolonged conflict between a willing to die large population, and a more sophisticated minor occupying force mortally afraid to die and an even larger national electorate, unwilling to tolerate long wars for potentially beneficial long term objectives due to an addiction to instant gratification and the handicaps of ignorance, apathy and attention deficit disorder, is a predictable no-brainer. Thus the ambitions of chicken- hawk neo-cons are doomed to failure. They have neither the principles nor convictions to convince the mbuttes and sooner or later the public will wise up and recognize them as self-serving hypocrites with a biased agenda for the benefit of vested interests whose puppets they are. Vietnam has already proved it before.

A recent article in the New York Times highlighted the scramble to procure better ceramic armor to protect troops against armor piercing ammunition and sophisticated directed explosives. This desire to minimize casualties is admirable and deserves to be lauded for its concern for the common soldier. What is missed is the self-defeating basis for the policy. The problem is that the American psyche, from the general public, the reserves and the enlisted personnel has been brainwashed into believing that war is a sanitized video- game. Thus the public is intolerant of casualties. The reserves consider themselves as weekend warriors resentful of sacrifice or potentially bane commitments, and only want the extra pay and macho self-butturance. The enlisted, duped by patriotic fervor or a macho ethic, suffer post-traumatic stress disorder or indulge in heinous atrocities when seriously threatened. This is not to minimize the honor, integrity and commitment of a large number of all three groups.

What is even worse is that the administration beholden to the moneyed interests and enslaved to the market and its manipulation by the powerful, promotes private contracting of national military responsibilities and thus disillusions genuine self-sacrificing patriots. When they learn that contracted security personnel doing what they do, are paid over ten times their salary and make commitments for three months and not four years, their ere-enlistment rates fall precipitously. The strategy of the powerful haves is to perpetuate their prosperity and hegemony on the backs of the ignorant needy without better economic alternatives. The leaders, media and other collaborating factions shove the truth under the rug, to entice the ignorant, poor and unthinking by imbuing or intoxicating the immature with chauvinistic jingoism to use them as cannon fodder. The paucity of response by the natives leads the pied pipers of Hamlin to offer a green card and citizenship to ignorant alien fools of other countries, imbued by greed to enlist and fight in unjust wars of choice, blundered into by the ignorance, arrogance and idiocy of the leaders.

Triumphs in wars either right or wrong are most often determined by the psyche, commitment and perceived purpose, as understood by the armed forces and the population. Throwing a lot of money at the problem is a poor subsbreastute for lack of those and vision or foresight. Over a hundred billion dollars have been spent by America on ABM and SDI without any results, despite the sane and sober warnings of unbiased physicists regarding their pragmatic viability and pitfalls. The development of the F-22 Raptor at a cost of 150 million dollars a piece, capable of shooting down any enemy plane many miles beyond visibility is an outrageous waste of resources without a clear comparable opponent aircraft and its murky inability of distinguishing friend from foe. The dismal performance of the Patriot missile system in the first Gulf War and its killing of British aviators by friendly fire in the second Gulf War make us painfully aware of the shortcomings of a blind obsession with technology as a subsbreastute for strategy. China , a potential adversary is already developing countermeasures to neutralize technological advantage by satellite persons, electromagnetic pulses and jamming devices that would leave technology dependent American forces blind and impotent.

The newest fad is to maintain hundreds of bases overseas as staging forces. Unfortunately they could serve as potential hostages in unstable nations with hostile populations. The disenchantment of South Korean allies over time and realistic understanding, with resultant alienation is a lesson that the retarded, uneducable Pentagon and national leadership are immune to learning. The pathological obsession of the Marine Corps for the Osprey capable of vertical takeoff and long distance flying, which has led to a waste of nearly ten billion dollars, is another example. The Ospreyâs ability could be easily be covered by a judicious mixture of short haul helicopters and fixed wing transports. The changed world from the prior monolithic Soviet threat needs prompt responses in distant places, but above all careful thought, planning, exit strategy and not reflex interjection in distant places without thought and consideration of consequences. The irrational and impractical insistence on the perfect rather than the possible, is a foolish waste of resources.

It is reminiscent of an apocryphal story about Darwin âs visit to Australia where a prankster glued the front of a bumblebee to the back end of a beetle and asked him what kind of insect was that? The smart and unruffled Darwin saw through the prank and asked whether the live insect hummed. The less sophisticated prankster unable to fathom the purpose of the question was caught unprepared and chose to say yes. Darwin calmly quipped, "I am pretty sure that this insect (like the Osprey) is a humbug!". Another new project is a new destroyer at the cost of enormous money to be able to plantard foreign shores from distances of hundred miles or more. Thus American strategy is cruise missiles, aerial plantarding and other aggressions from long distances without risking large number of troops. Just as one cannot make an omelet without breaking eggs, one cannot win wars or occupy foreign lands without sacrificing troops. Those who ignore history are condemned to repeat past disasters, to paraphrase Santayana.
