Power is put onto the grid - your meter box measures how much you use and that is how you are charged.
All power, even green power (wind etc) is simply put onto the grid - you just get charged more if you opt to pay for that sevice..
You are, however, simply using the same energy as everyone else off the grid.
Solar panels run reverse through the meter box and and turn the meter in reverse, or slow it down - which is how your money savings occurs. You don't use energy from the panels, you still use the same supply as everyone else. The panels just trickle feed the grid. Your meter box is the unit that determines the energy used against the energy returned to the grid.
To suggest that there has to be a side by side system is pathetically unimformed - what do you think - green energy is green and nuclear energy glows in the dark.
Sheesh! They didn't bring in privatisation for the individual - it was to be for the good of all. Unfortunately, it didn't work that way.

Imagine what would happen of the national electric grid system followed the same line.
