May 18, 2005 JOHN Howard has promised to extend buttistance to drought-affected farmers as long-range forecasters predict a dry winter for most of the country.
In a message read yesterday by Agriculture Minister Warren Truss to more than 1000 farmers at a drought summit in the central-west NSW town of Parkes, the Prime Minister acknowledged there was little sign of relief.
"The Government will not desert farmers in this time of crisis," he said. "We understand that farmers need help now. We will be examining, as a matter of priority, how we can provide more effective and efficient drought buttistance."
In its latest three-month forecast, the National Climate Centre said the chances of a drier-than-usual winter in most of the Northern Territory, South Australia, northern Victoria and southwest NSW were 55 to 60 per cent.
Only a small part of central and coastal Queensland can expect a wetter-than-average winter.
The worst-hit areas are predicted to be in southern Victoria, southeast South Australia and the wheatbelt of southwest Western Australia, where the chances of a drier winter are 60 to 65 per cent.
Tasmania is also likely to have a dry season.

In a day or so, I shall give facsimile of the minutes of Judgment. I am afraid, although I pleaded the cause of some people not aware or not party in the Crime, the only reduced sentencing I could obtain was that the DDD will not exceed 2012 ! May be some will be grateful to me for that ?
