East Arnhem land communities are dry. A few are trying to negotiate a Kava permit. I would like to see more projects started and sustained in the areas. Alchohol abuse can be, and often is problematic in the modern Aboriginal culture. Boredom is the great person.
Fasnag True Blue 928You gave an answer, but you didn't answer the question. And it is a very direct and simple question. 1. When did your ancestors arrive in Australia and where did...
The major reason Wadeye is a bit "iffy" is that is one of the very few communities that is still wet. Boredom+Depression+Alchohol does not make for a happy community. I haven't been since 2001, I am hoping it is getting better.
This seems a little silly.
"NEW AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT FUNDING TO buttIST WADEYE COMMUNITY
I am pleased to announce Australian Government funding of over $2.7 million for practical buttistance to the community of Wadeye, one of Australia's most remote and disadvantaged indigenous communities.
The Australian Government will contribute $2 million towards establishing a new broadband link between Daly River and Wadeye and the communities of Palumpa and Peppimenarti.
The new broadband infrastructure will enable more reliable landline phone connections and faster internet communication from Wadeye. This will help improve government service delivery and enhance regional economic development."
How, one wonders. I put broadband into Wadeye via PanAmSat-2 during 2000. That ran the TCU bank and a few bits of related architecture. It cost about $60,000 (I did all the selected communities for a total of $367,000). I noted, that the place rather need some buildings with structurally sound walls, some industry, some more health care, some entertainment.
But the guvmint thinks Internet access is the key. Jesus on a stick.

Any idea on how to improve the lot of the people is appreciated. At least it shows that some of us are still thinking.
You know, up Ramininging way a few years ago (until about 1968) the locals had a nice little earner happening with a fishing industry Then the guvmint decided that the required permits had not been completed, took a CAT dozer by ferry to the beach, and turned the fishing "fleet" (about a dozen boats) into kindling. It gets better, now the whole community can go on the dole.....
I note with some interest that a few aquaculture people are starting up co-operative development in the area. I'd go back in a flash. Love the place.
