Why Can't the Government Do This 1911
On Wed, 2 Aug 2006 15:10:21 +1000, "Peter Webb" We might well be urbanised, but our industrial spread is clustered.Australia has quite a sophisticated and decentralised industry base, relying on factor inputs that...

A carbon energy policy will be essential whether or not the government-of-the-day understands this now or not. The Amazon rainforest is teetering on the point-of-no-return. The world is only this far from global catastrophe. Politicians MUST wake up now and take some courageous steps or we're all f***ed.

The whole world (well, the democracies, anyway) have been lumbered with politicians who are f***ing cowards for 200 or so years. The world is facing problems the like of which have never been known in all of history, recorded or not. Sooner or later SOMEONE will have to grow a spine and deal with them or there will be revolutions and civil wars all over.

Talk of diesel from coal is a bit like the under-educated greenies* talking about energy from wind, waves, solar. Advocates of, say, solar energy simply have not enough science under their belts to realise just how LITTLE energy can be generated that way.

Or it's the same as the fringe loonies who talk about visitors from outer space. They simply do not understand that not too many little green men will be willing to undertake a journey that would take THOUSANDS of years.

In short, yes there are many millions (probably) of tonnes of coal in Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere. But producing diesel from it in enough quanbreasty to satisfy the world's demand for liquid transport fuel would eat it all up in very short order. Do the research. Look at how LITTLE diesel you get from a lump of coal. Read the predictions for coal demand from an invigorated China and India. Make sure you're sitting down.

Soon (perhaps sooner than the looming petroleum crisis) China, America's biggest creditor nation, will say "f*** you" when America asks for more money to fight their silly wars. Then, the US economy will nosedive so fast, their noses will bleed. After that, the world will look up to the triumvirate of India, China and Russia.

Russia will be one of the last countries to feel the petroleum crisis. And China is one of the countries with the biggest demand. Watch for a bipolar arrangement between the two that will shut out all others including America. Can you imagine what an energy-hungry warmongering America might feel like doing when it feels these twin pinches of nosediving economy and drying up of petroleum?

It frightens the hell out of me. Stop waffling about diesel from coal and start worrying about where to find a few politicians with balls.

*I don't mean greenies are under-educated. I'm a greenie myself. I just say that some of them are under-educated and they are more inclined to display it in public than others because they are the advocates-de-facto of alternative energy sources.)
