*Logic
In which case lots of people will die anyway. Leakage of unmanaged nuclear waste won't change that much.
What kind of help do you think should be given to "clean renewable power"? The technology of windfarms is established. It's just expensive - you need a lot of plant to generated a given amount of power. It's also unreliable, meaning that you need backup plant. The costs are prohibitive.
A dollar spent now on a wind farm is worth a great deal more than a dollar spent in 50 years on decommissioning a nuclear plant. Just adding together costs is dishonesty in itself.
The research costs are negligible, even allowing for discounted cash flow, when compared with the costs of building the plant once the technology is developed.
Didn't you ask that before?
Fine, and when hot rock technology is ready for production use, a judgement call can be made. We still have to have something in place until then, and incase hot rock doesn't deliver.
Nuclear power peaked for political reasons. The percentage comparisons are silly. How much nuclear power is generated in the USA? How much wind power?
And one nuclear power plant can generate more power than all the installed wind power in Australia.
And then there would be a mbuttive reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. We can survive ten years, and then things would improve.
The known resources
Some things, like solar water heating, would take off as soon as they became economic. At the moment, in Australia, they're not. The opportunity cost of a solar water heater exceeds the value of the power saved.
