Now that would be taking the hard road, wouldn't it?

I'm sure you will agree that aside from a few relatively minor injustices, the US system is fairly good.

The Patriot Act is a bit of an obstacle but, things like that aside, the US system has all the elements required by the rule of law.

It has a separation of powers, its parliament is subordinate to a written consbreastution and its courts are subordinate to the legislative power of the parliament. It gets a bit tricky when we get to the executive power of the President, but fortunately most Presidents have used it wisely. Our own Australian system looked at this and we did things differently, thank goodness.

But compared to many totalitarian regimes around the world the US system is indeed just. Exporting the spirit of this system as well as the veneer of elections could be seen as a "good thing".

Exporting the veneer of democracy without the spirit of individual freedom or the rule of war cannot be other than a bad thing for all concerned.

The US troop removed Zarqawi from an ambulance into which he had been already placed by Iraqi paramedics. According to the same eyewitness quoted...

We are seeing this situation played out very close to home in east Timor at present. There too they have a thin veneer of democracy, but a survey in 2001 showed there is little clear understanding of the meaning or implications of democracy. 36% understand democracy as freedom of speech. 11% of respondents defined democracy in cautionary terms. No-one equated democracy with elections.

We see the result of that on our TV screens in 2006.
