See thats where you make your big mistake. They are common criminals and they should be dealt with by the police. Until you start doing that you will be in a state of war and the whole middle east will hate you as an invading and occupying force.
Zarqawi may or may not have been taken alive with proper tactics. If he had been taken alive it would have been a huge intelligence and public relations victory by the COW. If he had died in an operation obviously planned to capture rather than kill him it would still have been a victory. Trying to liquidate him along with his wife and children without giving any of them a chance to surrender added many more recruits to the insurgency. Kicking him to rest in front of 14 witnesses adding dozens more.

BTW your claim the military are not the police isn't really true. The military have their own police. MPs are a bit rougher than civilian police, but they are trained in the application of non-lethal force. They are also trained in extracting information from people. A combination of these skills would have paid off much more than the feeling of power from 2 500lb plants and a gude kickin.
