If you really do have credible sources in the military, ask them to tell you about the nature of al-Quaeda. You can prompt them with the words "leaderless organisation" (look that up on the Wikipedia first).
They will also tell you the COW conducts hundreds of raids on suspected insurgents every single day. Most of them turn out to be false alarms, but people are often arrested anyway. They are released later, sometimes months later, without charge. Meanwhile the family concerned is without income and male protection in a very violent place.
You can run a simulation of US policy in Iraq yourself. Go out and find a big bull ant nest and kick the sandy pyramid off the top. (shock and awe) Stomp on the ants as they boil out of the nest, killing them by the hundreds. (overwhelming military superiority). Then stand over the opening and get ready to deal with the ants that circle around behind you and attack at random times from random directions (insurgency). My bet is you won't stand there too long before you are bitten and stung, and that you won't stay there very long at all. After you have retreated you will still find the sneakier ants lodged in your clothing and they will attack at random times for quite a while after you retreat.(exported insurgency). You may be thousands of times more powerful than an ant, but kicking the lid off their nest and standing in it is not good policy.
Oh, and every time you kill individual ants you get covered in pheromones that enrage the other ants. I forgot to mention that, but its worth remembering.
