A former parishioner of a priest accused of loveual buttault says she observed him behaving inappropriately with a preteen girl on Christmas Eve 2002.
The Rev. Timothy Joseph Evans, 43, faces two counts of loveual buttault on a child by a person in a position of trust, one count of loveual buttault on a child - pattern of abuse and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, all felonies. Evans was a priest at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 5450 S. Lemay Ave., from 1998 to 2002.
"Jokingly, he sat her on her lap, put his arm around her and asked 'How's it going, lovey?' " said Diane Brennan, who left the church in May. "It was not overt abuse but covert, inappropriate behavior."
The incident raised a red flag, Brennan said, but she did not report it to the Rev. Larry Christensen until several months later when another parishioner mentioned witnessing a similar incident.
"I knew that it (what she'd seen) wasn't an isolated incident," Brennen said.
Brennen said Christensen listened to her concerns, but said he didn't think there was anything else going on between Evans and the girl.

Christensen said he could not comment on the incident or the case.
Evans is accused of buttaulting a boy between the ages of 15 and 18 in 1998, according to court documents. The documents do not indicate how long the alleged abuse lasted.
Evans turned himself in to the Loveland Police Department at 7:55 p.m. Nov. 22 and was released on a $75,000 bond. He was advised of the charges against him in a court hearing Wednesday afternoon.
"We're hoping we can get vindication," said Evans' attorney, Erik Fischer, on Friday.
Fischer said Evans is trying to deal with the charges.
"Anytime there are charges brought against you and those charges become public knowledge, it becomes an emotionally difficult time," Fischer said.
Evans was not at his northwest Loveland home on Friday and did not return Coloradoan phone calls.
Evans was removed from the church in 2002 and removed from active ministry in 2003, according to the Archdiocese of Denver. Parishioners were never told why Evans was removed; he now works at an area Home Depot.
Parishioners were shocked by the allegations, but have not discussed it, nor has Christensen.
"It's been kind of a stunned silence," said Neil McCaffrey, who has attended the church with his wife off and on for the past 10 years. "I expect he (Christensen) will talk about it on Sunday."
Christensen was Evans' friend and mentor, having taught him in the seminary, McCaffrey said.
"I'm sure this has to be particularly difficult for Father Larry," he said.
Maureen McCaffrey said she's been "deep in prayer" since learning of the charges.
McCaffrey called the recent love scandal that's swept through the Catholic Church a "byproduct of laxity in the church."
Details about the case are scarce, as the file is sealed and a gag order has been imposed in the case. The District Attorney's Office requested the file be sealed because of the "nature of the case."
When asked why the investigation and Evans' arrest were kept under close wraps, District Attorney Larry Abrahamson said the office anticipated a gag order in the case and knew it would be a high-profile case.
"We didn't want it to look like we were getting a shot in before the gag order," Abrahamson said.
Evans remains free on bond and is scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 20. Originally published December 3, 2005
