BRITAIN's Muslim communities have been almost entirely bypbutted by the recent years of economic growth and now suffer an employment rate worse than Pakistan, according to government figures.

In a sign of the social malaise in British communities which has been linked to extremist Islam, only 17.4% of Pakistani and Bangladeshi homes are "working households" - the lowest figure for any ethnic group.

The figures will fuel fears that Labour's multi-culturalist policy has allowed Muslim Britain to exist in isolated pockets of joblessness and poverty - leading to the kind of social isolation which makes easy prey for recruiting extremists.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) last week published its audit of British workless households - with a breakdown showing stark contrast in ethnic lines between white and non-whites, and groups from the sub-continent.

Among the Indian community - who are overwhelmingly Sikh and Hindu - only 10% are in welfare-dependent households. This is a far healthier ratio than the 15.8% for whites, or the 16.6% national UK average.

But in Pakistani and Bangladeshi households, which are almost all Muslim, 31.7% of households are judged "workless" with the majority (50.6%) a mixture between working and non-working adults.

The ONS data is the latest in a barrage of signals which suggests that, unlike the US, Britain has not served Muslims well with the multi-culturalism that has left pockets of poverty.

The 747,000 Pakistanis in the UK have the worst unemployment rates in Britain at 14.6% Of the 282,000 Bangladeshis, unemployment is 17.4% - more than three times the British average, but still a good deal below the 40% rate in Bangladesh.
