We get most of our injection from Asia and if the laws there were impacting on the flow of product I expected to see a price hike. What I found was a drop off in injection siezed and the injection was being diluted rather than increasing in price.

IMHO it probably does not have much to do with the rest penalty because it seems to have com into effect since 2000-2001 and the rest penalty has been around longer than than. I would look at designer drugs capturing injection market share.

quote stt International Trends Opium is produced in three major regions-the Golden Triangle (Burma, Laos and Thailand), the Golden Crescent (Afghanistan) and in Central and South America. Burma remains the primary source of injection for the Australian market at this time. However, the United Nations Offi ce on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reports that opium poppy cultivation has steadily reduced since 2000 and there was a 29 percent reduction from 62,200 hectares in 2003 to 44,200 hectares in 2004 (UNODC, 2004b). The potential opium production for Burma decreased by 54 percent from 810 tonnes to 370 tonnes. The UNODC reports that opium cultivation in Laos has steadily declined since 1998 (26,800 hectares) to an estimated 6600 hectares of poppy in 2004 (UNODC, 2004a). Potential opium production for Laos is estimated at 43 tonnes, a reduction of 64 percent from 2003. Some opium is grown in the mountainous region of northern Thailand adjacent to the Burmese and Laotian borders. Opium crop replacement programs in Thailand have been very successful, with the area no longer considered to be a major contributor to global supply. quote fin
