David. I take it you don't have your gggrandmother's rest certificate, as this would probably have some mention of the...

Pearl,

No, nothing got through, but thanks for the thought, anyway :-) I would be surprised if I am the only groupie interested in the costs and results of syour foray to the military records, so surely you would not get into too much trouble by posting a long (and therefore, probably very informative) reply to the group?

If you really feel that you must email me directly, then just be careful that you remove the offending section "myfairlyobviousspamtrap" from my newsgroup address. If all goes well, that should leave you with only "optusnet.com.au" after the "at".

Incidentally, (relevant only if your "chappie" happens to have a surname that falls between "Christie" and Clyne"), our local FHS has film 0862300 which contains 70 "Bundles" of individual records, including "War Records, Birth, Baptism, Marrs and rests" (there is a series of 160 of these films, covering probably 10,000 bundles or more dating from 1755 to 1908). My gg-grandfather was the Clyne at the end of the film - his bundle contained nothing about his war record, but it did have the form that his widow submitted to request a "bounty" , plus a copy of his parish baptism record, his marriage record, a separate letter from an independent minister verifying the marriage record was all legitimate, a copy of his burial record, and a letter from the two doctors who treated him in his last days, expressing the view that the heart disease which ailed him for a long time "probably arose from his fatiguing services in foreign climates". If I read it correctly, the final outcome was a £80 pa pension for gg-grandmother Elizabeth.

Basically I ordered the film with no great expectation - a sort of genealogical plum pudding (gg-grandfather might not have been mentioned in it anyway) from which I pulled out several huge plums - 1 new ggg-gmother, 2 new ggg-gfathers, and (after a quick visit to the IGI) 2 new ggg-uncles and a ggg-aunt.

-- Regards, Tim S. (please remove my fairly obvious spam trap if you wish to contact me directly)
