David,

If you haven't already found them, I strongly recommend that you add www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and www.scottishdocuments.com to your favourite sites.

Ken, Sorry, just looked at how I answered your questions and realised it might be a bit difficult to find amongst the other text. I've recopied it here in this body of message to...

The first site has a wealth of info - old parish records, civil registration records (1855 onwards), etc. The costs are very reasonable - £6 gets you 30 credits with which you can start searching. (After 168 hours you need to pay again, but any previously unused credits are still available to you). For 5 credits per page you can download images of birth, marriage and rest records.

records Boswell Don't have their marriage certificate yet, this information came from an extract entry of birth for Maggie, born 02-05-1871...

My own experience with Scotlandspeople has been great. After I had downloaded two images which were close to unreadable, I emailed them to see if they could re-scan and email me new scans. Better than that - they actually rescanned and posted me A3 sized hard copies (at no further cost to me).

At the second site you may find copies of wills and other documents. I was stunned recently when I found the wills and buttociated documents of two of my Scottish great-grandfathers there, and could download images of the lot.

-- Good luck Tim S. (please remove my fairly obvious spam trap if you wish to contact me directly)
