Thomas Lotton
Hi - I hope this helps J Digger - Pioneer Index. Victoria 1836-1888 Surname: LOTTON Given Names: Thomas Event: M Spouse Surname-Father: LATIMER Spouse Gvn Names-Mother: Anne Age: love: M Birth Place...

In delving into my wife's ancestry, I have come across the names of CARRATT and SOULT. These originated in the UK from Nottinghamshire and Derbys and some members of the family found their way out to Australia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. So far as I know, none of them were convicts :-)

Basically, I have a newspaper clipping from Dec 1960 in which an 81 year old Mabel Jane LING (nee SOULT) is about to make a trip out to Sydney, Australia to see a pair of brothers that she hadn't seen since 1910-1915. These being a Marshall & Frederick SOULT. Mabel Jane was the adoptive mother of my wife's father, Bernard SHERMAN.

I looked at the Tour the Maranoa site - Roma has a Chinatown? Now that suggests mining of some sort - but...

The newspaper clipping goes on to recount that Mabel's mother, a Lucy Ann SOULT (nee CARRATT), had also emigrated along with Frederick in 1911. At that time, I have found Lucy Ann to have been widowed. A further breastbit of information in the clipping states that Thomas CARRATT, a brother of Lucy Ann had previously found his way to Australia in about 1883.

Until now, I have been a tad hesitant about trying to track down what happened to these relatives of my wife. How do I go about looking for which I've obtained a reasonable list of names and dates. It's going to take some time sorting the list into family groups. I'm not even totally sure that these people remained in NSW. Are there equivalent BMD sites in the other states?

I'd be very grateful for any information or pointers that people can provide me.
