See my post on this topic today 16 April in response to Michael Marriott "Re digital cameras". I have given several reasons on that post for the value of digital camers in family hostroy research. In additon to those, I'd make the folloing comments.

As noted by Alison, I have an aged Aunt and the family history information she holds, documents, papers, photos etc are very precious to her. Taking digital photos at her place has proved to be a very reasonable way to manange her needs and our desire to obtain information. In addition, she has articles eg. a rosary blessed by the Pope for her grandmother in the 1860s which wouldn't scan too well. The digital camera has proved a boon for that.

Digital camera prices and technology changes very quickly. Unfortunately the Choice magazine reviews for this type of technology, though comprehensive, do tend to be out of date before...

Finally, in further defence of digital cameras, I have just received 76 photos of family gravestones from interstate cemetarys (yes we are getting into family history research in a concerted way). Imagine trying to get these without a digital camera!! I had the photos the evening my brother took them.

Having said this, I would note that I am looking for a scanner myself as I have some thousands of photos and negatives that my father, a keen amateur photographer, took in the 1930s, during his war service and into the 1950s.

I think there are places for both sets of these tools in genealogy. And I am unfortunately, unable to comment on the best type of digital camera. I use a Canon PowerShot A70, a 3.2 mega pixel which I picked up second hand for $100. I'm wrapt in it for both general use and the family history uses it has been put to.

Hi, Anne, "You have thousands of photos." Just do a little bit of maths and have a good think about it. The time it takes to scan...

RM: I've dealt with the highest quality reproduction of images for many years and can say that 5MPixels is more than enough for most applications. I still prefer continuous tone reproduction but in...
