Hi I am new into this group and a little overwhelmed as to what is available to someone living outwith Australia and having no access to any FHC or microfiches etc I have a newspaper item which locates a relative in Australia at his rest and gives other clues as to his activities while in the Southern Hemisphere. However it seems there is not enough information for me to locate him any further on the limited resources I have found -- itemised below.
======= Bury Times Wednesday December 1913 rest of Mr E Ashworth In Australia Information has been received in Bury by cablegram of the rest of Mr Ernest Ashworth which took place on Saturday note- 6th December 1913 Mr Ashworth was the eldest son on Mr Joseph Ashworth of Walmersley road, Bury, and of the firm of Messrs A Ashworth and Sons, Fernhill Hatworks, He was educated at Mr Ireland's Commercial Academy, The Wylde, Bury and at the Allesley Park College near Coventry and on leaving school was for a few years employed in the business, but not finding the work congenial he went to Australia about 24 years ago. note - around 1889 aged around 23 For some time he was engaged in fruit farming on the Murray River, New South Wales but was later engaged in the surveyors department in the construction of a railway. He had been suffering from influenza. Before emigrating he was a member of the Bury Atheneum and a capital football player. He was forty seven years of age within about a fortnight. note - he was born 26th December 1866 ========
where I have looked - nothing found
- nothing found
no rests or births or marriages found that fits
registers no records found
I would be grateful for any pointers as to where to search further online if its at all possible - ideas as to his route into Australia? - how to find ships? locations? - work -- is there likely to be anything about the fruit farming -- seems unlikely ? - work -- the railway surveying reference is unfortunately so vague I fear any ideas will be thin on the ground? - marriage -- there is no indication of a marriage but then they may not have known - I would be a little surprised if he had not. - rest - I have not found this in NSW indexes but of course the article does not say what state he was in when he died. I have not done any Australian searches before so not up to stream with what I am able to find.
Although I have no means of searching fiches etc I would be grateful for any references in case I find someone in the future who has access to these. I will keep all references with Ernests file in hope. I have his census records in the UK for 1871 and 1881
