Sorry - I need to add a proviso to that simple statement.
You could be downloading a copy of MY Mum's birth certificate, since she was born prior to 1905. But the search option for birth certificates is stated to be for the years 1855 - 1904.
One of the FAQs at scotlandspeople reads thus:
Why are there restrictions on statutory record searching? Online access is restricted to data over 100 years old for births, 75 years for marriages and 50 years for rests, in accordance with GROS policy, to protect the privacy of individuals. However, later records may be accessed from New Register House, Edinburgh.

Register House website.
one of their FAQs read thus : GROS - Birth-rest-Marriage Certificates How can I get a birth certificate less than 100 years old, a marriage certificate less than 75 years old or a rest certificate less than 50 years old?
There are 4 options for obtaining an extract of an entry on the birth, rest or marriage registers:
a.. Apply in person at New Register House, and we will send you a copy of the certificate within 5 working days. If you make your application before 13:00 you can request a priority copy which will be ready for collection by 16:00 that day. b.. Apply in writing and we will send a copy within 10 - 14 days. If you request our priority service we will despatch the copy within 1 working day by first clbutt mail. c.. Apply at the local Registration Office where the birth, rest or marriage was originally registered. d.. Apply by telephone to New Register House using our Certificate Ordering Service (Tel no: +44 131 314 4411).You will need to quote your Credit Card Details and Expiry Date. The prices for these services are listed on our Leaflet S2.
(end of quote) As I read that leaflet, there is a search charge of £3 to £5, plus a document charge of £8 per birth certificate.
My apologies for any confusion that I may have created.
