An earlier article in The Times of the launch Rodney sinking in Sydney Harbour, 1938. Some similarities with your grandmother's story.
LAUNCH DISASTER IN SYDNEY HARBOUR MANY CASUALTIES Sydney, Feb. 13 "Five persons were watered and 22 are missing as the result of the sinking of the launch Rodney in the harbour this after-noon. The Rodney, with 130 pbuttengers, was travelling down the harbour bidding farewell to the U.S. cruiser Louisville. When she was off Bradley's Head the pbuttengers crowded to one side, and the launch capsized and sank with a few minutes. It is feared that some persons were trapped insider her. The crew of the Louisville showed fine prompbreastude. One hundred and fifty life-buoys were thrown into the harbour by machines, seven sailors and one officer dived overboard and rescued many persons, and four boats were lowered within a minute. The launch Cambria, carrying the police band of 42 performers, who were playing the Louisville out of the harbour, was nearby, and the police at once stripped off their clothes and dived in. Scores of small craft quickly gathered around. Twenty of the survivors were taken on board the police launch and 26 on board the Louisville. The pbuttengers in the launch were mostly girls. Mr. Keith Wilson alone rescued five, who all clung to him at the same time. The men trapped in the cabin smashed the glbutt of the windows and scrambled out, dragging women and children to safety."
