Sands & McDougall Post Office Directories (annual up until 1974) would help you trace his whereabouts on an annual basis if he was in Melbourne the whole time. His rest certificate will tell you where he was buried, with a date you might get an obituary in a local or a Melbourne newspaper (or at least rest notices.)
He may have had administration papers connected with buttets owned by him in Victoria - you'll need to get someone to check the Probate Index. The records if they exist would be held by the Public Record Office of Victoria. You'll find a website for them using Google.
You might think of approaching the Prahran Historical Society to see if they could fill in more information, if he spent most of his time in Prahran.
