Hurtle origin of name

Paul Blair

Hi Paul,

My suggestion is Hurtle Fisher, a well-known racehorse owner whose horse Lantern won the Melbourne Cup in 1864. Originally from South Australia (and I suppose a connection of Sir James Hurtle Fisher, a politician) he and his brother C B (Charles Brown) Fisher owned a horse stud in Maribyrnong and other land in the old Town of Essendon. There's a Hurtle St in Ascot Vale.

Probably for no good reason, I've always thought of Hurtle as being an Irish name, only because a few years ago I watched one of those ABC dramas on a Sunday night set in Ireland, and there was a Hurtle in that. It took me ages to work out that's what they were saying.

There's a Hurtle Lupton, a councillor in Knox. Doing a search for Hurtle in Google Image, those that have Hurtle as a first name seem to have English surnames, so I guess there probably isn't much of an Irish connection. Ditto for PictureAustralia - mostly South Australian References. I think Sir James Hurtle Fisher was English.

Hurtle Fisher would have been the best known in Victoria.

Best wishes,

Alexander Strachan
AS far as I can see - all I can find is Isabella Mossman Strachan married in 1925 to William Richardson NZ folio number...
