John James Hairstens Marshall was born in 1868 at Dumfries, Scotland. His parents were William Marshall c1828-1900 and Elizabeth Forsyth died before 1860. William was born in Ireland, probably in Aghaloo parish, County Tyrone.

Joseph Garibaldi Marshall went on to study medicine, but died at a young age.
John James Hairstens Marshall emigrated to New Zealand. In 1896, John was residing at Thungia, Waipiro Bay, Gisborne, and by 1900, he resided at Monga-ol sp?, Ormond, Gisborne.
