BIG MISTAKE - do not merge someone elses file with yours - this is my experience.

Least preferred method: With Legacy you can import the Gedcom into a new family file Open both files and drag each family you are interested in across - bloc by bloc.

Alternate least preferred method: Pull the Gedcom into a new Legacy file Mark with a tag all the people you are interested in - using the list view is quite good for this Export Marked people to a Legacy file Start the numberin of the imported people at 90,000 so you can recognise them easily. Import them into you family file and check check check the imported names.

However the preferred method is to key every person yourself - it is the only way you can be sure that you know what is in your file. You can make sure that the standard for quoting and placenames is the same as yours. You can see who needs further research.

Irish family research, Mallow Centre Cork
G'day I would appreciate some advice and help please. I was just wondering if anyone had used the Mallow Centre in Cork Ireland, for any research...

Most important source your info - you wont remember in 5 years time where you got any one particular persons info.

I know it will take forever but it all depends on how important the line is. Most important line - do it manually Least important line - do it it in blocs Unimportant line - mbutt import the tagged lot from the file you created from the GedCom

That's my 10c worth

By merging other people's files into yours you can end up with hundreds of people in your file that you know nothing about.

Oh Helen, Thank goodness you responded. I once did a merge and completely messed it up but fortunately had made the backup of each before I merged...
