The messages are correctly threaded. (of course when people reply incorrectly attaching emails-posts with new subjects to an existing thread it doesn't help) You can download just the headers allowing you to elect which posts to view or not rather than getting them all.
My experience is with Agent but I have read about a number of others including free software.
Agent allows me to select from a wide range of display options. I can have different defaults for different newsgroups, for example my signature file for this group is different than the default for non-genealogy newsgroups and I can elect to by default email the reply as well as post if I chose. When replying quoted content is coloured differently to what I'm writing aiding in differentiating the two. Correctly formulated Sigs are stripped automatically when replying I can elect to not see more than once the same post sent to multiple newsgroups that I subscribe to. Easy to use keyboard shortcuts, N skip to next unread post, H to view the headers etc You can set thread to be Watched or Ignored thereby getting or not getting the message bodies when retrieving bodies. An so on.
