I suspect it wasn't so odd at all as it was more likely that the parents were availing themselves of the Legitimation Act pbutted in 1902.
Quoting from part of the Legitimations section at page 43 of the booklet accompanying the NSW Pioneers series CDs: "This Act allowed a District Registrar to re-register the birth of an illegitimate child, whose parents had subsequently married, to include details of the father and parents marriage."

This was the case for my father. His birth was registered in 1918, as shown following in the NSW index, his parents married in 1919 and his birth was re-registered in 1930 before he commenced work
