Joanne.
The 6 July 1891 was a Monday. If they were near Colombo and were to have arrived there early Wednesday, this presumably meant 8 July 1891.
According to The Times, Thu 9 Jul 1891: Shipping News FOREIGN ARRIVALS "COLOMBO, July 8.- Guernsey, st., and Rutherglen, st., Barry - Galley of Lorne, st., Hamburg."
I believe this translates to: arrived at Colombo July 8, the steamers Guernsey and Rutherglen from Barry (possibly South Wales - the docks there were built in 1890's - but not clear if both steamers came from Barry or just Rutherglen); also the steamer Galley of Lorne from Hamburg.
For what it's worth, here is the next report of foreign arrivals at Colombo:
The Times, Tue 14 Jul 1891 Shipping News FOREIGN ARRIVALS "COLOMBO, July 10.- Westhall, st., Calcutta for the Mediterranean."
Messages not on ng and not in ArchivesLindsay Graham") The messages are correctly threaded. (of course when people reply incorrectly attaching emails-posts with new subjects to an existing thread...
Using the Shipping News section of The Times, you may be able trace back from these arrivals to try to find where these ships came from originally and see if any lead back to Melbourne. Melbourne arrivals and departures were also often recorded in The Times, as well as in reports of arrivals and sailings at other foreign ports, e.g. Suez Canal, such-and-such steamer, from Melbourne, etc.
Here are some earliery mentions of some of the ships above:
The Times, Mon 22 Jun 1891 Shipping News FOREIGN ARRIVALS "SUEZ CANAL, June 20.- At Port Said.-.. Rutherglen, st."
FOREIGN SAILINGS "SUEZ CANAL, .. June 20.-Guernsey, st. (after repairs)."
The Times, Fri 24 Apr 1891 Shipping News FOREIGN ARRIVALS "SUEZ CANAL.-.. April 23.- Rutherglen, st."
The Times, Tue 14 Apr 1891 Shipping News FOREIGN ARRIVALS "SUEZ CANAL.-.. April 12.- Guernsey, st."
Even though the keyword search capabilities of The Times Digital Archive is very good, I have noticed sometimes that words that appear quite clearly in the text are not picked up, so the most thorough way (unfortunately the slowest) would be to browse by date and locate the Shipping News section (sometimes breastled Latest Shipping Intelligence or The Mails). It would require some detective work and a little patience but you may get a result. Good luck!
