It would not be impossible to check through obituaries without a precise date - but it would be an extremely slow process and one would have to have a high level of commitment. SKS's are extremely kind, but such a search would really be pushing the boundaries.

From my own family research, members of which lived-died in the the Randwick area, it would appear that this registration area was geographically quite large and possibly serviced by a number of local papers.

As a first step, I would recommend you order a copy of Mary Margaret Tierney's rest Certificate from BDM. This should give you some important information, including the full name of her husband and the precise date of her rest. The information on her husband should give you enough information to search his rest details.

Joey. The following news report appeared in The Times, Monday, 21 Jul 1947 (page 3): ACCIDENTS AT NAVAL FLYING EXERCISES FIVE MEN end From our correspondent Melbourne, July...

I have relied on the rest and ceremony Notices published in The Sydney Morning Herald (available on micro-fishe) to track down information from the 1920's to 1940's. This included finding the actual cemetery one relative was buried in, when the rest Certificate stated another (perhaps the ceremony director was having a bad-hair day). However, one needs to be quite specific as to date.

The most common burial sites for Randwick area residents would be Botany Cemetery (now known as Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park) and Waverley Cemetery. The former has a free search facility (www.esmp.net.au) and the latter charges for look-ups (www.waverley.nsw.gov.au) but will also provide photographs of sites at extra cost. Again, dates are imperative -after travelling over 200km to Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park to photograph a headstone, we found that while the full name matched, it was the wrong person. The right interment site was eventually found some months later - an error had been made on the spelling of the surname on the database.

Hi Lyn and others, Unbuttisted immigrants to Victoria have limited information because "officialdom" didn't need to know any more - they paid their own way...

It is quite possible, however, that these Tierneys may have been buried elsewhere. Back to the rest Certificate. This document will give you - Date and place of rest; Name and occupation; love and age; Cause of rest, Duration of last illness, medical attendant, when he last saw deceased; Name and occupation of father, name and maiden name of mother; Informant; Particulars of registration; When and where buried, name of undertaker; Where born and how long in the Australiasian Colonies or States; Place of marriage, age and to whom; Children of marriage.
