Hi Roslyn,
It looks like there was even a Canadian example as well.
If your gt grandparents were avid readers, they might have been Arthur Conan Doyle fans, and have read his history of the Boer War: They might possibly have liked the sound of the name, rather than have been making a big political statement.
Or was the name current before your ancestors went on to the farm. What was it called before? I think it would be interesting to have a close look at the history of the Yarck area. The closest thing to an historical society I can see in the area is the Murrindindi Heritage Register, whose details you can get via the RHSV Affiliated Societies Database.
If your ancestors were responsible for the naming of the farm, and they were contrarians, maybe Majuba Hill was a response to a property across the road called Mafeking or Ladysmith. That's where local knowledge would come in.
AndersonLiz McCoy Hi Liz, Some questions need answering so that SKS can possibly help you further such as when and where did Alexander Anderson and Sarah Ann...
And maybe they had pulled that name out of their distant past. If they were born in the 1850s, they were young adults when the disaster at Majuba Hill took place in 1881, and maybe it was a cause of celebration around Kilmore at the time. When does the name of the Majuba Hill in Kilmore date from? You can find contact details for Kilmore HS at the same link above.
Good luck,
