The St. Peters Anglican Church History Group invite you to, 'Saturday at St. Peters' on the 1st of July, from 1.30 p.m.- 4.30 p.m. at the church 187 Princes Highway, St. Peters. Of particular interest to those researching their family history is the data base containing Marriages, Baptisms and Burials of the nineteenth century. There is also a do it yourself tour of the historic graveyard and church. Members of the history group will be on hand to buttist you in finding your ancestors on the data base and in locating the position of their grave. St. Peters and its graveyard date from 1838-39. The church, the oldest building standing in the Marrickville Municipality, is built of sun dried brick and the roof is supported by ironbark pillars. The History Group has a wide knowledge of the social history of the area .Leader of the group Laurel Horton has recently edited the letters of Stanley Howard, curate at the church in the 1870s. This has provided a vast amount of knowledge of the people of that time, not necessarily married, baptised or buried at St. Peters. Convicts with a St. Peters connection are of particular interest to us at present. You can also watch one of our D.V.D.s. We have 'A History of the Church', 'The Stained glbutt Windows of St.Peters.' and our latest, 'Reading a Church, St. Peters Cooks River', describes how the stained glbutt and furnishings of the church are rich in symbols which are easily overlooked by those living in the 21st century. Other options are to join our sketching group, take photographs of whatever pleases you or listen to our church musicians play informally. Tell us your story over coffee, tea and a biscuit. It's all free. See you at St. Peters. Bob and Laurel Horton, St. Peters History Group.
