following. The year 1854. With another I'm researching Americans who came to a part of Victoria during the early days of gold. Working with a lady in the US on people from one small area who came to Victoria in quite a large number, we find that history written there in the US tells of many who died in Australia and a memorial has been placed in the hometown cemetery. We have them and yes they did die in Australia and buried here with a headstone back home. memorial on the family plot in US but the US history books tell that his body was shipped home and buried there. from anyone who may have come across a body being shipped 'home' - impossible. did arrive in Melbourne used as ballast from US. It wouldn't have lasted long in Melbourne in summer even with an ice house. that he is now under the Vic Market but this can't be proved. His rest certificate has nothing of a burial on it. I do know of a case of a child's rest where she was buried in a lead coffin in case the family returned home to the US - they would take the body with them. The thought was in their minds, and the year was 1856.
