Trying to find family members who arrived in Australia in 1840 on the George Fyfe. They were from Ardnamuchan in Scotland. Having left before the 1841 Census they are proving difficult to track down back in Scotland. They were John and Mary Smith with Lachlan 18, Roderick 16, Hugh 14, George 12, Mary 10 and Margaret 9.

I have been supplied with some information about the arrival of the ship. The "Commercial Journal", 25th Jan 1840 says: "From Torbermory, Scotland, on Thursday, having Left the 16th September, the barque GEORGE FIFE, Captain Pike, with 178 Government Immigrants, under the superintendence of Andrew Little, Esq. Pbuttengers. - Mrs. Liddle, Mr. Thompson, and Miss Williams." The pbuttenger list details should be on the NSW microfilms. In the next column: "The George Fife, from Torbermory, has brought 176 Scotch emigrants. They are a fine parcel of Highlanders; and most of them are unable to speak a word or understand as much of the English language. There were no rests on board during the voyage."
Mary was my g grandmother and I have details of her marriage in the Hunter Valley in 1850 and her family after that but I have been unable to find any of the rest of the family after they landed. Mary married Patrick Smith in Maitland and her father may have been an early settler in Cessnock. A J Smith is mentioned as a buyer of land in Cessnock.
