I take it you don't have your gggrandmother's rest certificate, as this would probably have some mention of the event.
If it was the Greycliffe ferry disaster, this occurred 3 Nov 1927 when the ferry steamer going from the Circular Quay to Watson's Bay collided with the liner Tahiti, which was moving towards the Heads (too quickly as a Marine Court of Inquiry later found) on her way to San Francisco. The ferry sank at once with over 40 lives lost.
There are several small articles in The Times archive on the disaster. I've saved copies so can email them to you if you like.
Given the date, I would expect that a list of victims would have appeared in Sydney papers in the weeks that followed, although according to one article, they had difficulties in recovering a number of the victims' bodies. One section of the ferry, that included the women's cabin, separated from the wreck and could not be located.
