and a special mention to Sally Flynn who provided the details of the first child born in Melbourne:- ------------------------------- According to Historical Records of Victoria Volume 3 1836-1839 Edited by Michael Cannon Page no. 597 Birth 30 April 1837 Does not say where born Child's Christian Name - John Melbourne Parents' name - James and Mary Surname Elliot (i.e. Gilbert) see ref 1 below Abode - Melbourne Quality or profession (father) - Smith By whom ceremony performed - T.B. Taylor Ref 1 A notation by the Rev. J. C. Grylls dated October 1838 states that he made "true copies from the original memoranda in the handwriting of T.B. Taylor and W.G. Australia (Bishop Broughton) respectively" This probably accounts for the mistake in the first entry, where the surname should read Gilbert, not Elliot. ---------------------------------

BTW: When I take my morning bike ride along Kananook Creek in Frankston there is a plaque in the wall commemorating the meeting of the party headed by surveyor Grimes and a group of native Australians on the banks of the creek in 1803.
