Regular readers of this forum would have noticed me taking an interest in geolocations.
Jean McCoy Help on more detailsHi Tania This may be the lady you are looking for. As you will see she was born as Phyllis Reardon and died as both Phyllis Reardon and Frances Jean McCoy...
This stems from a computer application that allows me to buttign locations to events, which (for a widespread family) can be quite interesting. Living places are easy enough, but....!
Victoria Lookup pleaseHi John, I didn't find a marriage, but found births-rests of these children belonging to a John Hooper & and Ann Digger - Pioneer Index. Victoria 1836-1888 Surname: HOOPER Given Names: Celina Event: B Spouse...
While the software does allow me to search at the international level, it is not au fait with the byways of Australia. This led me on a long search for maps-locations-anything that would help me locate cemeteries, at least broadly.
I looked through local government sites (most were no help), OzGen (even offered them the data I was collecting) and the Geoscience Australia site (which, it turns out, merely reflects but does not check, data supplied by states. Lots of questionable data there!) In fact, it seems we do not have an official gazeteer for Australian locations.
None the less, I decided to record material as I found it. Some I have been able to verify (Google Earth) and some not. But I've built a database, and it is out for comment. Go to www.pcug.org.au-~pblair-auscemand check the maps.
Please don't be too critical of accuracy for the moment. The available (government) data is only accurate to 1.8km, so some places will be a bit off. One cemetery (in NSW) is shown as being underwater.
I'm not a professional programmer so have kept it simple. The search facility works well. So far, there is no printer option.
But - is there any use for it? Apart from learning a lot of things, and having use for what I found, does not mean that I want to spend my remaining days building something useless. Maybe I already have, but you be the judge of that.
And I would need help from people who note that the official location shown on my amp is not correct. But that's for the future.
I welcome your views.
