I have a 3xG uncle, William Henry Featherston-e, whose fate is a bit of a mystery that I've been trying to solve lately. He and his wife Hannah (or Anna) nee Rutherford came out here in 1855 with son Henry aged two and an infant according to the pbuttenger list, they had two more sons who died as infants in Dunolly and Pleasant Creek, (found on Digger index), then Hannah remarried as a widow in 1861 back in Durham England. Last week at the PROV I found a Mrs Featherstone aged 41, son 5 and infant on a shipping list out of Melbourne in 1858 which could have been her leaving the country bound for Liverpool, although her age seems wrong and I can't see how she could have had another child at that time. She and son Henry and new husband are there in the 1861 Durham census, but no sign of a rest either here or in the UK for 1st husband William Henry, unless he was the unfortunate fellow supposed to be named Featherstone, according to a prescription found in his pocket, who hanged himself by the Yarra in 1864. I've read the coroner's report and various newspaper articles, but they apparently couldn't identify him any further. He's buried in the MGC and was around the right age for my William Henry at 35. I guess if your wife and son left you after two other babies had just died and remarried back in England, calling herself a widow, it could be pretty depressing! Don't know if I'm likely to be able to get any further with finding out what happened - does anyone have any helpful suggestions?
