In FTM, if you view a tree or a report on screen of any set people you want to report, then you should find under the FILE menu an EXPORT-FILE option that allows you to export the people contained in that tree or report. The exact way you do it varies a bit between versions of FTM but the facility has been in FTM for a long time now.

The challenge however is to construct a tree-report that contains exactly the people on your mother's side (or whatever). There seems to be no direct way to do this in FTM.
FTM do have the "Kinship Report" which includes the relatives of the primary individual (and their spouses) plus the relatives of their spouse (but not their spouses), so it isn't what you want. If only they gave you an option to exclude the relatives of the spouse, but they don't!

Here are a couple of techniques I know of to do what you want to do. buttume you want to send info on your mother's side.
1. Do a Kinship Report of your mother's mother. Export that group of people. Do a Kinship Report of your mother's father. Export that group of people. Now you have the people you want, but split over 2 files (with a substantial overlap). Now merge these 2 files.

2. Make a list of all your mother's furtherest-back ancestors (the ones at the top of the tree for whom you don't have parents). Go into View Custom Report, and then use the Select Individuals as folllows. For each of the furtherest-back ancestors, select that person and then click the people growing numerically, but you can ignore any warnings that some of them are already included -- this is not important). Once you have built up the complete list of descendants of all your mother's ancestors, click OK to them exported.
My personal preference is the 2nd approach (because merging files is more of a hbuttle). I usually just print myself a tree of my mother's ancestors first, and then with it in hand, progressively go through the "furtherest-back" ancestors (looking down the page along the right-hand side) adding their descendants into the list of selected individuals.
It would be nicer if there was a simpler way. If only they gave you some options on View Kinship.
