RM: It's possible to create "PDF" files from all documents from any program if one has the FULL verson of Adobe Acrobat. That's the idea behind it - being able to convert any document into a universal file format so that it can be read by everyone (via the free Acrobat program). The FULL version of Adobe Acrobat is needed to *make* PDF files, and others with the full version can open and manipulate the document unless it has been locked. I think there are free versions that do a similar job, and some of the commercial graphics programs like Photosop, Freehand and Illustrator will make PDF files as a matter of routine.
Your suggestion above is a good start, but anyone who wants to convert documents into the PDF format could have it done by friends or acquaintances who have a PDF writer, and also ask for the files to be locked.
There's one disadvantage in converting web pages to the PDF format for the web -- people can't READ them on the web. The documents are downloaded when you click to access them IN a web page, and then Acrobat starts up and displays the whole document when it's finished loading. Sometimes this can take a long time if there's lots of pics in the file. With that system readers have no idea what's in a PDF file until it loads and starts to display, and this can be disappointing if it takes a while to download and the material turns out to be irrelevant or unwanted, but that doesn't happen with ordinary web pages because we can immediately escape from any page which looks uninteresting.
So while PDF files are good because they can universally read, and also locked if necessary, they cannot be used for web browsing. That is done with the *other* universal language (HTML) which all the web browsers use

Using PDF files
RM: Yes that's the best way to partially protect images, although occasionally watermarks or similar images can be roughly "patched up" in Photoshop or similar programs.
Today I came across a popular Australian website and I wanted to download a few pics of a motorbike I once had, but I found they could not be collected as souvenirs. Each pic displayed a message advising readers to email the website owner if they wanted them. Perhaps that system (whatever it is) might be a good way to go for genealogy enthusuiasts because it could put them in contact with more people who might have a similar family interest.
