I was given a tip(faux par on agents part) one day. Send off for a tourist visa (lke a mini visa). If you have convictions and want to enter Australia you cant just get an ETA, you have to send off like a mini visa with all your convictions listed along with about 20 pounds and your pbuttport and then they write back to you, saying that you are fine and youve got the tourist visa, or you are denied. At least you will know whether to bother going through the visa process, as the Tourist visa uses the same (section 80 i think it was) which is basically your character buttessment.

I had to do this as i had convictions and was visiting australia before my visa application landed there as we were on a RTW trip. My visa came back in my pbuttport from the AHC with a note saying " your convictions have been noted, should you aquire any more then you must tell us on EVERY application to enter Australia."

When i got the visa ticket on the plane, it asks if you had prior convictions, i ticked yes and was stopped at the airport, checked on comp and ten i was free to go, so beware they do check.

Hope this essay answers yourer question and puts you at ease more,im returning the favour for polly as she did the same for me when i was at your stage. My laast conviction was about 12 yrs ago too if this help

I got my visa with no questions asked, after having 2 brain ops and a heart valve replacement at 30 4 yrs ago, so dont worry about meds either LOL

Good luck

THIS IS VERY ENCOURAGING! I am just starting the process of visas, police checks etc with a 3 year conviction back in 1992 to contend with.

This is precisely the way I thought might be best to dip my toe in the waters - go for a tourist visa first and if that fails - well, a shrug of the shoulders really - but if I get that visa then that puts my foot in the door to eventually migrate to Brisbane to be with my Interdependency Partner and retire happily every after.

Any other hurdles must be small ones?
