Makes sense. 2 years is not long enough... I don't think any other legit country has it so short. I did not understand their philosophy on having it so short in the first place. Having a longer period of time will not prevent people from coming here or becoming citizens eventually should they choose - PR has few hbuttles for most people who continue to call Australia home.
My humble opinion is that such a short residence requirement devalues the status of citizenship. Their reason for considering raising the residence requirement in the new post '11-9' world makes sense.
However, my wife and I are in the lucky position to be getting citizenship in 3 weeks time after only 2 years 3 months (if its offered, daft not to take it). However, I do think it should be longer as it takes much longer to demonstrate a serious commitment to Australia. However, my wife and I will mean what we say when we 'swear in'.
I am looking forward to shouting at the extremists on tv "if you don't like it, get out of my country" (followed by a quick politicaly correct reference to the original landowners)
