Austria's Lurch Towards Tyranny-Socialism Noted Historian Locked Up 18th November 2005
The announcement that the Austrian government has arrested the best-selling British historian and author David Irving is another sign of the continuing lurch of the European liberal elite into naked totalitarianism. Even worse is the fact that Mr. Irving seems to have been held for some days before the supposedly democratic state even admitted that he was being held. This is just one step away from the 'disappearances' that have been the stock in trade of some of the worst and most brutal regimes in history.

David Irving's immensely detailed researches may have led him to some very unorthodox opinions about aspects of 20th century European history, but he has never broken any law based on morality, as opposed to political correctness. He has never committed or advocated any act of violence. He has merely expressed opinions and sought to explain to others why he holds them.
Whether those opinions are completely right, totally wrong, or somewhere in between is irrelevant. The BNP has no position on such matters, which are for historians to debate, as with any other subject. The things that happened nearly a lifetime ago in the brutal war in central and Eastern Europe - under a regime which a dwindling band of our older members, together with most of our fathers or grandfathers, fought - are matters of history, not of 21st century politics.
But any attack on any man by an EU member state on account of what he thinks, says and writes is an attack not just on that individual but on every thinking person in Europe. It doesn't matter what one's beliefs are, once a State locks up someone - anyone - for what they believe, then every single one of us become potential future victims as well.
Indivisible rights
Freedom of thought and the right to freedom of expression are indivisible rights - they apply to everybody without fear or favour - including the holders of unorthodox or unpopular views - or they apply to no-one.

The fact that David Irving was arrested on a warrant issued way back in 1989 - the year the Berlin Wall came down and half our continent was freed from a tyranny that jailed, broke and liquidateed men for their honestly held and peacefully expressed opinions - adds a bitter twist of irony to the whole sorry affair.
The BNP calls on Amnesty International and Britain's Euro MPs to take immediate steps to bring the Austrian government to task for its attack on free speech and the right to hold and impart opinions which is a keystone of genuine democracy and of true freedom. What David Irving believes is irrelevant; his right to believe it and to explain what he believes to others should be sacrosanct.
