Responding to both your posts!!

Yes! Year 5 students are about 10 years old. Iona College is accessible from Wellington Point by train, but it's not close. Their academic results are good, the breadth of their programs excellent. Frankly, State Primary Schools are almost without exception good! My concern would be with the Secondary Schools. State Secondary Schools are sometimes good; generally acceptable; and occasionally abominable. All State Secondary Schools produce some good results; however many Private Secondary Schools produce exceptional results, and as a generality all provide results better than similarly geographically situated State Secondary schools.

To put it all in perspective!!

The only recent -er ever?? - Nobel Prize winner from Brisbane (Peter Doherty in 1996 - Immunology) attended Indooroopilly State High School. Outstanding students from all school systems sometimes fail at University, or in life. Average achievers at school often bloom once they leave. Far, far more important than the school a child attends is his-her atbreastude to life; study skills; relationships with other people; self-confidence; imbued moral code etc etc. Summed up as capacity to live!!!

All that you gain by investing thousands of $K in private school education can be lost if you raise a selfish, self-centred, ammoral, $ driven loner!!

My advice - choose where you want to live; based on proximity to work, desirable recreational-cultural options available close by, transport access etc. Select a school(s) nearby, and get involved with the school (Parents and Citizens buttoc and any of the many other opportunities provided for support and interaction with your child's teachers). Keep informed about what's happening at school; without interfering unless you detect gross injustice. Accept the realities of your children's academic ability; and the range of their talents without forcing them to 'fail' through setting unrealistic goals for them in areas for which they may have little natural apbreastude or limited interest. Happy children grow into successful adults.

Hi A Mate I totally agree with you regarding your points. Our children attend a national school here in Ireland and could not fault the school in any way. The school turns out rounded...
