Australia is experiencing economic boom at the moment and the IT industry is growing rapidly. The demand for IT Professionals has never been higer than what it is today, so my suggestion is that just make this move as this seems to be the right time for that.
After spending time in Australian IT Industry I can safely say that basically its all about Sydney when it comes to the IT Jobs. I was just reading a survey (by SEEK, CareerOne, and JobNet) and they say:
52% IT jobs are in Sydney 25% in Molbourne 7% in ACT
Canberra is facing a serious shortage of IT Guys as most of the jobs there have an extra clause that the person should be an Australian Citizen so many of those who have just plain residency status, are automatically filtered out.
Brisbane is good in IT (3rd in rank after Sydney and Melbourne) but of course cant be compared with Sydney Region.
PS: Never ever think about moving to Adelaide (South Australia) if you are in IT. The salaries here are extremely low (becasue SA claims to have a low cost of living which itself another mistery for me to understand) and there are very few jobs. I'm myself moving away from this state pretty soon now.
